Under Ontario's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, raccoons are protected furbearers with specific rules:
- The 1km rule: live-trapped wildlife must be released within 1 kilometre of capture — dumping them "out in the country" is illegal

- Toronto bylaws add layers: feeding wildlife is illegal, and certain trap types are restricted
- Baby season brings extra scrutiny — orphaning kits violates humane-treatment provisions
